The terrain, may include surfaces of grass and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes gravel roads, and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures.
While spikes are suitable for grassy, muddy, or other slippery conditions, runners may choose to wear racing flats, rubber-soled racing shoes without spikes, if the course includes significant portions of paved surfaces or dirt road.
